C’mon SPRING! We’re so ready for you. It’s been a long winter, friends. Hell, it’s been a long year(s). But now suddenly it's March and temps are approaching 60 degrees? Regardless of the fact that time waits for no one, let’s roll with the things we are dosing on this month.
1. Reading: Ultra-fast Fashion Is Eating the World, The Atlantic
This is a must read for everyone–whether you buy from fast-fashion retailers or not. In the article, Rachel Monroe distinguishes ultra-fast fashion companies like Boohoo and PrettyLittleThing from “first generation” fast fashion brands like Zara and H&M. The difference, she argues, is that ultra-fast fashion capitalizes on the pressures women feel on social media to project an idealized self-image. Relying heavily on influencers and celebrity culture, ultra-fast fashion has manufactured the idea that we constantly need to be wearing this week’s trend, and that repeat outfits on your feed is a no-go. Not to mention, the rapid production of cheap clothes comes at a huge cost to the environment and the (majority female) garment factory workers.
2. Burning: Maui Escapist Candle
“The tide rises and falls on a secret beach on the island of Maui and with it, notes of sea salt, sea moss, and driftwood evaporate into the air. A touch of zesty bergamot and soft ylang ylang round out aromas of the ocean.” Ummm anyone else feeling this? (my arm is way raised up!) Facts: It’s March in New England and traditionally this is when Spring Breakers invade warmer spaces—but since we are still dealing with this pandemic—this helps.
3. Adorning: Serpent Choker and Bracelet by Satomi Studio
Satomi Studio’s latest collection is all about new beginnings and transformations, and we’re a bit obsessed with the serpent choker and bracelet in our store right now. The serpent is a symbol of rebirth and healing, and with the year we’ve been through, nothing seems more fitting. Both are made from brass hand-woven into an Etruscan chain and are connected together by the snake’s mouth and tail.
4. Applying: Moon Milk Cleanser
Fat and the Moon’s Moon Milk is the double-duty cleanser of our dreams: It’s a gentle, ultra-hydrating cleanser that you can also use as a moisturizer. It’s a great product if you want to try out face oils or find them too oily since it’s sort of a happy in-between. We suggest adding it to their Mermaid Mask for an extra boost of hydration.
5. Watching: Echo In The Canyon
I usually travel to Los Angeles in early Spring to do much of my summer vintage buying - but since I’m not traveling this year this will do for some much needed inspiration. Echo In The Canyon celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to the California Sound. Narrated and hosted by Jacob Dylan we get exposed to a pocket of creativity within a short time period that influenced a generation of new artists - of course the FASHION is also great to see!
